The history of these lands starts in the time of the Christian Reconquest; as there was then a natural division between the Christian Kingdoms and the Muslims.
At the beginning of the XIII century it was governed and administered by a religious and political institution, The Order of Cavalry of Santiago, its headquarters were in Villanueva of the Infantry. However, it was the small and historic town of Montiel that gave its name to the region. In addition to that, the battle in which Pedro I “El Cruel” died at the hands of his brother Enrique of Trastamara (the future king Enrique II of Castile) took place in Montiel, in 1369.
Ancient lineage titles, such as the one of the Marquis of Melgarejo, an illustrious noble from long ago, have been connected to the history of the vineyard, as it belonged to one of the family´s branches until the beginning of the 1980s.
The two great geniuses of the Spanish Golden Age and Universal Literature: Francisco de Quevedo and Miguel de Cervantes are also connected to this land. Quevedo lived only a few kilometres from Marisánchez, before being exiled from the Imperial Court to his estate in the town of Tower of Juan Abad in 1621, where you can today visit his museum.
The land is full of history-crossroads and travellers’ inns. During the XVII century, the Marisánchez farmhouse, home to Bodegas Real vineyards, was one of the country inns that dotted the Royal Road that leads from the peninsular East Coast to Andalucía and today reminds us of that piece of our history.
In 1984, the property was acquired by the Barroso family – one that was passionate by the world of viticulture. After a careful analysis of the environment and the characteristics of the land, they began an ambitious and modern vine growing plan. For this project, vines were especially selected and planted in further extensions.
The cellar premises, which are an essential part in the winemaking process, were finished five years later, in 1989. The most modern winemaking and fermentation technologies had already been applied, making them pioneers in the region. The first vintage yield was then created in 1990.
